When I recently joined Sheana Hamill on “Womenthology,” her LinkedIn Live series showcasing remarkable women leaders, our conversation sparked insights that went far beyond typical corporate culture talk. As a cultural anthropologist turned workplace consultant, I shared how my unique background shapes Culture Grove's mission to build truly values-driven and successful organizations.

The Hidden Pattern in Great Workplaces

“Looking back at my most rewarding corporate experiences,” Sheana observed early in our discussion, “they all shared one crucial element—the culture was right.” This wasn't just a coincidence. In today's competitive landscape, where talent has unprecedented choice and mobility, culture has emerged as the decisive factor that separates thriving organizations from those struggling to retain their best people.

But here's what many leaders miss: authentic culture goes far deeper than ping-pong tables and casual Fridays. It's about creating an environment where every team member feels genuinely valued and connected to the organization's purpose.

Cultural Anthropology Meets Corporate America

My fascination with how culture shapes human behavior started at home. As the daughter of a Latina mother and a Polish/English/Native American father, I witnessed firsthand how cultural dynamics influence everything from daily interactions to core values. This early exposure led me to anthropology, where I spent over a decade studying cultures across Latin America and eventually, corporate environments.

The transition from studying traditional cultures to analyzing corporate ones revealed a surprising truth: organizations, like societies, develop their own unique cultural patterns that profoundly impact everything from decision-making to employee satisfaction. At Culture Grove, we leverage these anthropological insights to help companies build cultures that actually stick.

When Values Leave the Page

Many culture initiatives fail because leaders carefully craft values statements that basically become part of the decor or words on a badge. I’ve seen this repeatedly with clients (before working with us). The missing piece? Translating those values into daily behaviors and decisions.

This realization led us to develop a different approach: integrating values into every aspect of organizational life, from hiring practices to leadership development. The key isn't just defining values—it's living them consistently and intentionally.

The Leadership Evolution

My conversation with Sheana revealed a crucial truth about modern leadership: empathy isn't just a nice-to-have, it's a business imperative. When employees aren't thriving, it's rarely about their capabilities—it's usually a signal that the cultural environment isn't supporting their success.

This connects directly to the power of diverse teams. The most innovative organizations don't build echo chambers—they cultivate environments where different perspectives collide productively. At Culture Grove, I deliberately seek out team members who bring complementary expertise and challenge conventional thinking.

Rethinking Work-Life Balance

Perhaps the most resonant part of our discussion tackled the perpetual challenge of work-life balance. Instead of chasing the myth of perfect daily equilibrium, I advocate for “balance over time”—recognizing that life moves in seasons. Some periods demand more intense focus on work, while others allow more space for personal priorities. The key is maintaining healthy boundaries and sustainable practices for the long haul.

Your Turn: Let's Continue the Conversation

My appearance on “Womenthology” reinforced that we're at a crucial moment in workplace evolution. As organizations navigate hybrid work, changing employee expectations, and the need for authentic inclusion, getting culture right has never been more critical.

I'm curious to hear your perspective. What cultural challenges is your organization facing? What strategies have worked—or haven't—in building a workplace where people truly thrive? Share your thoughts in the comments, or reach out directly. Let's keep this important conversation going.
